The Lakshmi Devi Lalit Kala Academy was established on July 27, 2002, under the Shri Purna Chandra Gupta Memorial Trust during the lifetime of Smt. Lakshmi Devi Gupta. Smt. Lakshmi Devi had an interest not only in singing but also in literature, culture, and the arts. It was her dream that Kanpur should become a vibrant hub of art and culture.
Smritishesh Yogendra Mohan, the founder and first president of the Academy, paved the way for the Academy from the very beginning as a great poet and thinker
In 2004, the Academy relocated from Purnachandra Vidya Niketan to 111/71, Ashok Nagar—the former residence of the Jagran family—located at Moti Jheel Crossing.
The Academy is working comprehensively in the field of art through its platforms dedicated to literature, music, painting, and theatre. Numerous renowned musicians, writers, theatre artists, and creative artists have showcased their work on the Academy's stage. The Academy also specially honors these luminaries during its annual functions. Many trainees who have honed their skills here are bringing renown to the Academy in the worlds of literature and art.
